  Perro De Presa Canario 

Registration: All Perro De Presa Canarios are registrable with the United Canine Association and eligible to participate in all UCA sanctioned dog shows and events.

The United Canine Association recognized and began recording registration for the Perro De Presa Canario in 2002.


Breed Characteristics: 
The Perro De Presa Canario (Presa Canario) is known to be a courageous and fearless guardian. 

The Presa Canario is a large, powerfully built dog.  The body of the Presa Canario is slightly longer than its height at the shoulders.

The head of the Presa is large, block like and heavy.  The Presa Canario should give the impression of a powerful and capable mastiff-like guard dog

The temperament of the Presa Canarios is relaxed, attentive and self confident. 

Presa Canarios tend to be guarded around strangers, and often remain standoffish unless properly socialized. 

The Presa is astoundingly gentle and affectionate with it family members and children.

Country of Origin:  It is thought that the ancestors of today's Perro De Presa Canario were almost certainly brought to the Canary Islands by early Spanish explorers.


Original Purpose:
Historically the Presa Canario was a guardian of farmers and their property.  The Presa Canario also served as a working cattle dog and protected the farm against stray or feral dogs.

Today's Uses: 
The Presa Canario today is primarily used as a guard or companion dog. 

  Perro De Presa Canarios weigh on average 85 - 140 pounds.

Male Presa Canarios are 23 - 26 inches tall when measured at the withers (shoulders).  Females Presa Canarios are 22 - 25 inches tall at the shoulders.

The Presa Canario's coat is fine, short, and smooth with rather coarse hair.

The color of the Presa Canario varies from any shade of fawn, brindle or black and any combination of these colors with white and or black markings.  The white markings of the Presa Canario is to be nominal and may appear only on the chest, throat or feet.

The face of the Presa Canario must have a dark brown or black mask, with or without a white blaze or patch on the head area.

Temperament:  The Perro De Presa Canario requires early socialization and needs proper training young age. 

With Children: 
Perro De Presa Canarios are generally good with children and can be very dedicated however over protective of them.  

Other Pet Compatibility:  Generally the Perro De Presa Canario does not do well with other dogs.  The breed can be very dominate towards other dogs.  However with early socializing the Presa Canario can be tolerant of dogs that it is raised with.

Training of the Presa Canarios requires firm and consistent method.  Presa Canarios can be challenging to train, as the breed can be willful and dominant.

Activity Level:
  The Presa is a large breed that needs room to exercise.  

Life Expectancy:
  Presa Canarios live an average life span of 10 - 12 years.
