The United Canine Association recognized and began recording registration for the Golden Retriever in 2002.


Breed Characteristics: 
The Golden Retriever for good reason is one of the most popular breeds in the world today. 

Golden Retrievers are powerful, active dogs, sound and well balanced.  Golden Retrievers possess a personality that is eager, alert and confident.  

The Golden Retriever is a multitalented breed that excels at many tasks.  Whether it be a model sportsman's companion, loyal family pet, field gundog, devoted guide or service dog the Golden Retriever is up to the task.

The breed is gentle with children, they enjoy the endless attention that children provide.  Golden Retrievers are adapt at swimming and greatly enjoys swimming. 

Golden Retrievers are trustworthy, reliable dogs.

Golden Retrievers are large dogs, from light pale yellow to burning golden sunset colors. They have generally flat or wavy fur that is medium length, furnishing featherings on the legs, chest, and underbelly.

The Golden Retriever is a handsome dog not only in appearance, but in personality as well.

Country of Origin:  Great Britain


Original Purpose:
 Gun and hunting dog

Today's Uses: 
Companion, gun and hunting.

 Golden Retriever females: 55 - 65 pounds.  The males of the breed are larger, Golden Retriever males: 65 - 80 lbs.

Golden Retrievers females are 20 - 22 inches tall; Golden retriever males are 22 - 24 inches tall.

  Golden Retrievers have a flat or wavy coat with a good feathering on the chest, legs and underbelly.  Golden Retrievers have a double coat; a dense, water-resistant undercoat, and a thick, straight or wavy outer coat.


Color:  All variations or shades of golden or cream; from pale yellow to burning orange-gold.  Red or mahogany are unacceptable colors.

Golden Retrievers are responsive, alert, well-mannered, and very playful. They do very well with children and offer a high tolerance of them.

With Children: 
Golden Retriever are exceptional with children.  As with all dogs the Golden Retriever should be properly supervised around very small children.

Other Pet Compatibility:
 The Golden Retriever is a great companion with pets and other dogs.

The Golden Retriever is a breed that trains easily and excels at obedience and agility type events.  The Golden Retriever is an intelligent breed that is always enthusiastic to please its owner.  They train easily, as they are energetic and eager to satisfy their owners.

Activity Level:
Golden Retrievers are an active breed.  Golden Retrievers enjoy and need the the opportunity to exercise regularly.  Golden Retrievers have a tendency to become overweight if not exercised regularly.

Life Expectancy:
  10 - 13  years is the normal life expectancy of a Golden Retriever.
